The Brewing Process - Hydes - Made of Manchester

We are a brewer and pub retailer based in Media City, Salford.

In 2012 the decision was made to close the Queen’s Brewery site, and the business re-located to its new state of the art brewery premises in Media City UK.

Our brewery is entirely dedicated to the production of cask ales. Four beers are available on a permanent basis and an additional four ranges of fabulous beers are also produced.

Hydes Beers incorporate the finest ingredients sourced from around the world and are brewed in an artisanal / craft manner. The beers are distributed through our managed and tenanted houses, wholesalers and pub groups. Please visit the ‘our beers’ section for more information.

Hydes Brewery own over 40 pubs split between managed houses, fully operated by the company, and tenancies which are let to independent operators. Our pubs are located in the North West of England, North Wales and Staffordshire.

Our pub estate includes destination food houses, suburban locals and town centre venues. We aim to make every one of our sites the best in it’s locality. We have been so successful that some of our pubs have won national awards, as has Hydes Brewery itself.

As a successful organisation we are constantly seeking to improve our estate through refurbishment and acquisition. If you are aware of an acquisition opportunity that may be of interest to us, we will pay a ‘bounty’ of £1,000 if we go on to purchase the site. Terms and Conditions apply – please contact recruitment@hydesbrewery.com for more details.

We are proud of our great heritage at Hydes and with over 150 years of history we strive to continually improve and evolve our business to meet the needs of all of our customers.

We are very much an amalgam of the traditional and the contemporary, so please explore our pubs and try our beers, we are sure you’ll agree!

Our History…

When Alfred and Ralph Hyde acquired a small brewing concern from their grandfather Thomas Shaw in 1863, little did they know that they would beginning a brewing dynasty.

As the Hydes business developed it was managed by a variety of family members from different generations, and by virtue of its increasing fortunes it outgrew its premises several times.

In 1899, with William Hyde now in control, the business located to its long-term home at the Queens Brewery site in Brooks Bar, Manchester. It was under William’s leadership that the company began acquiring an estate of public houses through which to distribute more of Hydes’ products. When William passed away in 1916 his sister Annie took over the business, going on to run it successfully for a total of 56 years. Since then the family has continued to remain in control up to the present day.

Hydes Ales started to acquire an excellent reputation throughout the North West, and in 1944 the company was re-named Hydes Anvil Brewery to incorporate the family trademark. After many years the “Anvil” name was dropped and Hydes Brewery became the company name.

In 2012, after over 100 years, the company ended its tenure at the Queens Brewery and relocated to its existing site in Media City – the Beer Studio.

The Beer Studio is entirely dedicated to the production of cask ales. Four beers are available on a permanent basis and an extensive range of constantly changing seasonal craft ales are also produced. Our beers are distributed through our managed and tenanted houses, wholesalers and pub groups. Go to ‘our beers’ for more information.

Hydes Brewery continues to operate over 40 pubs split between managed houses, fully operated by the company, and tenancies which are let to independent operators. Our pubs are located in the North West of England and North Wales.

Our pubs include destination food houses, suburban locals, town centre venues and bars of distinction. We aim to make every one of our sites the best in its locality, and some of our sites have won national awards, recognising their excellence.

The company has also twice won national awards for Tenanted and Leased pub company (50-+100) category.

We have a great heritage at Hydes with over 150 years of history and we are now looking forward with confidence as a brewer and licensed retailer competing successfully in these highly competitive markets.
